We need your help!

The Boys & Girls Club of Easton is working with young people throughout the City of Easton to secure a safe haven for them to skate, park, bike and ride, away from the perils of the streets. To that end, we recently established the Easton Skaters Stay Off the Streets Club.

The main thrust of the club at this time is to raise $150,000 to build and maintain a proposed skate park. The proposed facility will be built at Lower Hackett Park on Easton property in the Wilson area. Although a skate park has been on the City of Easton’s agenda, the impetus for the park has been advanced since the recent death of 13-year-old Easton resident Robert Mitchell, who was killed when he ran into the back of a Lanta bus at an intersection. He had been riding a new bike only hours before the accident.

Club members want to dedicate the proposed sports complex to Robert Mitchell, so they and others will not forget him and that because of his untimely death, his friends and other young people in the City of Easton will have a safe, fun place to enjoy the sports they love.

Easton Mayor Sal Panto, Vice Mayor Elinor Werner and many of Easton’s community youth service organizations are supporting of the sports complex.

We ask you to support the young people in their quest, knowing that you and your organization are very supportive of young people and their needs in the Lehigh Valley. They also need to know that people care about them and their safety. Your investment in these children will help them make their dream of the skate park a reality.

The group meets Wednesdays 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Easton Teen Center, 1101 Northampton Street, Easton to brainstorm, organize trips to skate park facilities, plan bake sales, car washes, T-shirt sales, and more. It is not an easy task for youngsters who would prefer to play with friends all summer, but they are committed to memorializing Robert Mitchell and to establishing a blueprint for their own park

Contributions may be made payable to Boys & Girls Club of Easton’s “Skate & Bike Memorial Fund,” in support of the physical structure of the park, activities of the Easton Skaters Stay Off the Streets Club, and unrestricted use as you may.

Please mail your contributions to: Boys & Girls Club of Easton, P.O. Box 741, Easton, Pa. 18044-0741.

For information or to meet with myself and some of the young people, please call me at 484-239-2075 or e-mail
